EYE SCREENING CAMP, BAMUNDI

On 18th January 2026- Rotary Club of Guwahati in association with Nari Kalyan Mancha, Bamundi Sakha and Sri Sankardev Netralaya, Guwahati organised a Free Eye Checkup and Cataract Detection Camp at Bamundi High School, Hajo-Bamundi Road, Kamrup District. A total of 100 persons were examined and 13 cases of cataract were detected. Cataract surgery will be carried out at Sri Sankardev Netralaya, the premier Eye Hospital of Northeast India.

FELICITATION OF PRESS CLUB MEMBERS

The programme also featured a felicitation ceremony for the newly elected office-bearers of the Gauhati Press Club. Due to unavoidable circumstances, only three members could attend. Senior journalist and the President,Khagen Kalita was felicitated by Rtn. Gautam Sharma with a fulam gamosa and a citation, while Amarendra Deka and Press Club President Pradip Barman were honoured by PDG Rtn. Prabhat Kedia and Rtn. Gajendra Khound. Khagen Kalita later delivered a thought-provoking address on the challenges faced by journalists, highlighting professional pressures, political influence, and the need for ethical and unbiased reporting. He also paid tribute to veteran journalist P. G. Baruah of The Assam Tribune for his courageous contributions to journalism.

BLANKET DISTRIBUTION AMONG THE DESTITUTES TO MARK

To commemorate the 53rd birthday of Zubeen Garg, the Rotary Club of Guwahati organised a community service activity. 24 blankets were to homeless and destitute individuals residing around the Hanuman Mandir area. Among the beneficiaries were one disabled person and one orphan.9 Rotarians were present and actively involved in the distribution process.The recipients expressed gratitude for the timely support as winter approaches.The programme successfully combined celebration with service, reflecting Rotary’s motto of Service Above Self and reinforcing the Club’s commitment to social welfare.

WORLD POLIO DAY

On the occasion of World Polio Day, Rotary Club of Guwahati organized a Polio Awareness Rally from Shraddhanjali Kanan Public Park to Zoo Road, starting at 6:00 AM. All eight Rotary Clubs of Guwahati participated to highlight Rotary’s vital role in eradicating polio worldwide. PDG Rtn. Prabhat addressed the large gathering of Rotarians and morning walkers, emphasizing the remarkable global reduction of polio cases—from 350,000 annually in 1985 to just a few today—thanks to Rotary’s tireless efforts and collaboration with WHO, UNICEF, and other partners.

RCG conferred prestigious Bhupen Hazarika Award

On 8th September 2025, to commemorate the 99th birth anniversary of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the Rotary Club of Guwahati conferred the prestigious Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Award 2025–26 on Sri Nakul Das, a celebrated exponent of traditional boat race songs from Barpeta. The event was organized in association with the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC) under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and was supported by Gunjan, an amateur artists’ forum, and Brahmaputra Mendolins, a renowned group of instrumental artists. Following the award presentation, Sri Nakul Das captivated the audience with a soulful performance of his popular songs. The ceremony was held at Shilpgram, Guwahati, and the award was graciously sponsored by Rotarian Safiur Rahman Saikia in memory of his late wife, Dr. Niloofer Rahman Saikia.

On 27th September 2025, members of the Rotary Club of Guwahati expressed their deep condolences on the passing of Zubeen Garg, the noted singer, music director, actor, and philanthropist. A condolence message was drafted by the club and personally delivered to his wife, Smt. Garima Saikia Garg, by the members. The Rotarians met Smt. Garima Saikia Garg, wife of Jonokontho Zubeen Garg, at their residence in Kahilipara and handed over the copy of the condolence message.

Voluntary Blood Donation Camp

Club Project on the month of September 2025. On 17-09-25- Rotary Club Guwahati in association with Royal Global University and Gauhati Medical College & Hospital and Assam State Blood Transfusion Council organized a Blood Donation Camp at Royal Global University campus . There 96 donors for the blood Drive which was collected by GMCH during the process. The Voluntary Blood Donation Camp was conducted in association with Gauhati Medical College & Hospital and Assam State Blood Transfusion Council supported by Mr Kushal Deka Chairman of NGO Neeramoy. The Gauhati Medical College & Hospital and Assam State Blood Transfusion Council initiated the Voluntary Blood Donation Camp on 17th to initiated the target of 1 lakh health camps commemorating the 75th Birthday of Prime Minister Modi.

MENTAL HEALTH AND DRUGS ABUSE AMONG TEENAGERS

The Rotary Club of Guwahati, under the guidance of Literacy Chair Rtn. Dr. Ranjana Borah Das, organised an awareness programme on Mental Health and Drug Abuse at Panbazar Higher Secondary School on 28th August 2025. The event was held in collaboration with Snehalaya and the SITA Centre for Child Rights under the banner “Choose Life, Not Drugs – Your Life is Precious, Don’t Let Drugs Take It Away.”The session saw the participation of 65 students from Classes VIII–X, 5 teachers, and 12 Rotarians. The resource team—Mr. Birendra Kr. Baxia and Mr. Richard Johnson Claridge from Snehalaya, along with Rtn. Anit Agarwal from SITA Centre—spoke on the dangers of drug abuse, its legal and social impact, and the importance of mental health.Video clips, pamphlets, and interactive Q&A made the programme engaging and impactful. Students and teachers appreciated the initiative, which encouraged open discussion on stress, peer pressure, and healthy coping strategies.

To mark Maternal and Child Health Month of the Rotary calendar, the Rotary Club of Guwahati conducted a food distribution drive on Friday in the village of Bamunkhat, Digaru, Kamrup Metro. The initiative benefited over 60 mothers and children from 50 households, with a focus on promoting nutrition and well-being among underserved communities.Essential food items including dal, onions, soya chunks, black grams, and biscuits were distributed as part of the club’s efforts to address basic nutritional needs of mothers and children.

EYE SCREENING CAMP AT MAYONG

In a significant step towards accessible healthcare in rural Assam, the Rotary Club of Guwahati (RCG), in collaboration with Sri Sankardeva Nethralay Hospital, Mayong Gaon Panchayat, and Roja Mayong Unnayan Samiti, organized a comprehensive eye screening camp today at Mayong Higher Secondary School. The camp, which began at 11:00 AM, witnessed the participation of 109 villagers from the surrounding areas. A team of ophthalmic specialists from Sri Sankardeva Nethralay Hospital conducted thorough eye examinations for all attendees. • 25 individuals were diagnosed with cataract, and • 2 individuals were diagnosed with PTZ (Progressive Tunnel Vision or other advanced ophthalmic conditions). These identified patients will be provided free surgical treatment at Srimanta Sankardeva Netralaya, under the sponsorship of the hospital, as part of its collaboration with the Rotary initiative.
